Subject: Reservation of an Instagram Account and Preparation of a House Device
Further to Memorandum MM/2026/002, members are advised that the proposed Instagram account has now been reserved under the name @extraordinaryhouselondon.
This precautionary action was taken to prevent the name from being acquired by an unauthorised person while the Committee considers the objections and recommendations invited in its earlier memorandum.
Reservation of the account does not constitute approval of its operation. The account will not be treated as formally active until the Committee has considered the representations received and settled the rules governing its purpose, conduct and limitations.
A simple device bearing the letters EH has also been prepared for possible use as the account’s identifying image. The device is provisional and remains subject to Committee approval. Its preparation should not be interpreted as the adoption of a new crest, seal, coat of arms or other heraldic claim.
The Committee understands that certain members may consider the reservation of an account and preparation of its appearance to anticipate the outcome of the consultation. The Secretary has been advised that it is customary, in matters of electronic administration, to secure the relevant name before beginning a prolonged institutional disagreement over whether it ought to be used.
The work was completed directly and at modest expense.
The Treasurer has since observed that it might more properly have been entrusted to a member owing the House a substantial sum, in lieu of part of that debt. This possibility was not considered until after the work had been completed and the member concerned had again become difficult to reach.
The Treasurer has requested that future tasks involving modern communications, minor design work or the lifting of moderately heavy objects be referred first to the register of members with outstanding accounts.
Members are reminded that:
- the House has not yet commenced publishing on Instagram;
- the proposed account remains subject to the continuing Committee process;
- the EH device has been prepared but not finally adopted;
- the reservation of the account does not relax any existing rule concerning telephones, photography, recording or disclosure; and
- objections and recommendations invited under Memorandum MM/2026/002 may still be submitted within the stated period.
No member, guest, employee or authorised representative should describe the account as launched, approved or available for the documentation of luncheon.
A further memorandum will be issued after the Committee has considered the submissions received.
